TTK: Art Assignments

TTKs are Sky Blue Window's 'Things to Know,' events, ideas and cultural creations that we think are worthy of your time and attention.

When Sarah Urist Green left the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), there was a bit of chatter. Yes, she is not the first curator to find a new path after the CEO change-up at the museum. Yes, she had brought some very interesting art to Indianapolis as a contemporary art curator at the IMA including Graphite, Andy Warhol Enterprises and several installations at 100 Acres. Yes, she recently had a baby, her second child. All these things came up, as did the fact that she's married to a pretty popular writer, John Green, one who tends to do some interesting creative work, too, both online and in print.

On Tuesday, the world found out about her next project. And it sounds more than a little exciting. She'll be traveling, visiting artists and gathering - for everyday people and artist-types alike - art assignments. With the disclaimer that they may not seem like "art" or "assignments," she introduced her new web series, produced in partnership with PBS's Digital Studio, in an online video. The Art Assignment premieres in early 2014 and already has more than 14,000 subscribers.

Want to get your hands dirty with at-home assignments before the new year? You can visit Miranda July and Harrell Fletchers "Learning to Love You More" series, originally published from 2002 to 2009 online. Or check out Paper Monument's book Draw It With Your Eyes Closed: The Art of the Art Assignment(a few assignments and some comical results are available on n+1's article on the book).
