Re: “Not-So White Albums

Fantastic show. A brilliant commentary on the slow decay of the cultural object. A blank white surface, and yet, if you have owned a copy since it came out in 1968 and had them stick your copy in their bins at random I have no doubt you would be able to find YOUR copy because every copy has aged in such a unique way this it is like a fingerprint. People joke about similar exhibitions with other records, but NO other record would work here.

Re: “The Top Three

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. It caused an entire generation to leave the house in the winter in coats that weren't warm enough. We weren't sure what it meant, but we wanted to be "freewheelin'" too. It was the album that turned the notion of the authentic in folk music 180 degrees.

The Beatles Second Album. The Southern White Citizens Committee wasn't paranoid, rock & roll really did cause "race mixing." Before this record white artists covered black artists in ways designed to conceal and cover the music's origins. Here the original artists were celebrated! This record sent an entire generation of middle class white kids to the record stores searching for black music. Its impact cannot be overstated.

Forever Amber "The Love Cycle." 99 original copies pressed in the UK in 1969, a one-off by a group of art school students that has more memorable hooks and melodies per square inch than any other record ever. If this had been by a major 60s band it would be remembered as one of the best records of the era. The fact that it was made by a group of people who then faded into obscurity makes it an accomplishment of stunning proportions. Finding it made me realize that the amount of undiscovered brilliance is unimaginable and the world is a better place than I thought. Think "Odyssy & Oracle" and "Pet Sounds" but better.
