Slam Dunk Museum, Movie & More

Last weekend, Selection Sunday kicked off the official start of the Big Dance with the announcement of the 68 college basketball teams picked for the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. As the Road to the Final Four begins to build a fire in the belly of b-ball fans this time of year, we'd like to remind you that today, March 20th, marks the 60th anniversary of Milan High School's IHSAA Boys' Basketball Championship.

The humble little school (enrollment just a bit more than 160) managed to defeat much larger Muncie Central High School (of 1,662 students), thanks to the now-famous last-minute, buzzer-beating shot by Indiana legend Bobby Plump. In honor of this special day in Hoosier hoops history, take a peek at the 1954 Milan Museum.

The story of the nail-biting game was immortalized (sort of) in the 1986 movie "Hoosiers." But not surprisingly, as with any Hollywood film that's "inspired by a true story," this one captured the essence of the game rather than the nuts-and-bolts facts. But this "page" from the 1954 Milan Museum play book chronicles the differences between the silver screen and hardwood accounts.

And for a full-court press to wring out every last bit of sentimentality on this day, head to Plump's Last Shot in Broad Ripple to enjoy a burger and raise a toast to the team that put Milan on the map. While you're there, you just might spy Bobby Plump. The 77-year-old has passed the ball (and restaurant ownership) to his son Jonathan, but it's still Bobby's culinary home court.
