Midnight at the Chatterbox

Back in 2008, Anderson, Indiana, native Becky Archibald, embarked on a journey to Monteton, a "magical" village in southwest France and home of the Dordogne Jazz Summer School. In hopes of immersing herself in jazz study and performance, Archibald attended its intensive music language course held annually there in a 12th-century castle.

During her stay, the award-winning composer, pianist, recording artist and educator also wished to learn how to write a jazz chart. This she did when she completed Midnight at Monteton, successfully premiering the composition at her camp's closure. A composer-in-residence with the summer school since 2009, Archibald continues to be inspired by Monteton's beauties.

Friday night at the Chatterbox Jazz Club: Indy's own miniature jazz fortress will welcome Archibald as she performs highly original and intriguing compositions from her new jazz CD, also titled Midnight at Monteton. "The CD represents different phases of my learning, having some of the very first pieces I had written and some of the newest," Archibald says. Joining her on Mass Ave for this late-night set will be several of her collaborators on the CD project, including Jim Farrelly (saxophones), Fred Withrow (bass) and Gene Markiewicz (drums), along with recent Jacobs School of Music graduate Joel Tucker on guitar.

"Midnight" at the Chatterbox runs from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Chatterbox Jazz Club, 435 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis.
