Re: “The Weirdest Thing Lou Reed Ever Did

Dr. Gass's Lou Reed story was already legendary when I took his class in 1993. And one day he told us another long story about how he met Axl Rose at the VMAs just after Appetite for Destruction came out - this was about 1988 or so, 5 years before. The story went that at an after-party in NYC he got Axl Rose to commit to visit the History of Rock class to do the same thing Lou Reed had done. (And given what we knew about previous visits by Reed, Bo Diddly, Kenny Aronoff, anything was possible.) He said that Axl was excited about giving a lecture to a university class, but Dr. Gass doubted it would ever come to fruition. "And of course that never materialized,” he goes, “well, not until today." He turns to the lecture hall door. "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Axl Rose!" And everybody jumps up and people start freaking out. Then he turns back to us and goes, "Nah, just kidding."
