Fountain Square Sound Check

In addition to the booms of downtown fireworks and your uncle's, cousin's or friend's madcap front-yard explosive show's pops and cracks, the Circle City will be home to another noisy experience this July Fourth. The Fountain Square Music Fest aims to add some indie music to your Independence Day. To prep you for the event, we're previewing several of the Indianapolis musicians on the bill.

Verdant Vera plays fuzzy psych-rock-influenced pop songs that also hint at soul and New Wave influences. The band kicks off the festival at 1 p.m.

Singer and songwriter Jenn Cristy began her career as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist in John Mellencamp's band. Her piano-driven rock reflects a wide range of influences from pop and rock to country and stadium anthems.

Bonesetters is a Midwestern four-piece specializing in swinging surf pop. That might sound wrong, but if you've seen this band live, you know that it comes out just fine. Here's a video from Bonesetters' record release party for "Figure It Out."

Sweet Poison Victim blends a literal world of musical influences into songs that sound like the party you've always wanted to attend. And, yes, it is an Indiana band.

Hero Jr. plays rock music. And the band plays it on tour just about as much as it can. When other bands plan seasonal tours, Hero Jr.'s schedule suggests its musicians need to plan seasonal breaks. This band closes out the Fountain Square Music Fest right before revelers will get the chance to check out the Indianapolis fireworks show.

The Fountain Square Music Festival runs from 1 to 9:50 p.m. in the PNC Bank parking lot in Fountain Square, off of Prospect Street. Tickets are available for purchase online.
