Re: “Misogyny in Music

Hi, Ben! My name is Elle and I'm the founder of shehive, a grassroots project creating safe spaces to deconstruct gender inequity. Our primary programs are buzzwords, a workshop series for women to explore gender issues in pop culture, and women317, a quarterly performance and visual art show featuring local women artists. I'm a writer and musician as well, so you can imagine how important the topic of misogyny in music is to me. women317 is particularly special because when my partner and I started the show in March 2014, there were no venues in the city that regularly featured and celebrated female artists, musicians included. We decided to create what we wanted to be a part of the city's culture. I think part of cultivating the local music scene is investing in emerging artists, many of whom are women. Misogyny in music is everything from microaggressions to sexual violation of female artists and audience members alike, but also involves a subtle and overt form of gatekeeping. My focus is on making space for women in music to speak their truths and celebrate one another and develop their gifts. But there also needs to be more men amplifying women's voices (not to be confused with speaking for or over), making space and opportunity for women to grow in and showcase their talents (hello, booking managers), and keeping venues safe for female artists and supporters (promoting a culture of consent and dismantling gendered assumptions and barriers one show at a time). We do our best with our little slice of the pie at women317, and support venues and musicians and promoters who do the same. Thanks for continuing this conversation. (I've also left this comment on the facebook thread.)
