Re: “Pay The Artist

Nice article Hugh. This reply is primarily a rebuttal to Shiners. IDADA's guidelines are provided to provide artists and those doing business with artists some mutually beneficial information. In the Donations section Hugh provided a link to, artists are repeatedly encouraged to donate to causes they want to be involved with.

"In the end, your donations to these organizations should be given because you believe in and support the cause and the mission of the group, not because you will get a tax deduction or great exposure..."

Historically, artists are involved with social causes because they care. Sometimes we need to set personal limits and know when to say "no".

During the four years the guidelines have been published (at http://www.idada.org/ethics-fair-practices… ) every charitable organization but one has endorsed the guidelines when it was brought to their attention. Every single organizer I've had conversations with had no idea that donating a painting was not the same as a retailer donating an appliance. The tax law has not changed regarding artists donating artwork. Only expenses and not fair market value is allowed for deductions.

When art becomes a center piece for a silent auction at a $100 per plate dinner, wouldn't it be nice once in a while to invite the generous artists? Wouldn't it be nice to be told who bought your artwork?

When giving is about caring - fine. When giving is for "exposure" and a donation becomes about business, then the guidelines serve as an educational tool.

Re: “Alternate Spaces

A timely article. I recently added a video story on Funkyard on the IDADA site. Sherry Stiver does a great job combining art with her coffee shop in the heart of Fountain Square. Over 50 artists are represented. You can view it at http://www.IDADA.org/2013/07/funkyard-fun-…
