The Wizard of Moz

So maybe you're not a rabid fan of Stephen Patrick Morrissey, Johnny Marr or those other guys that made up The Smiths. But if you toss around the phrase "Indie Rock" with cool, knowing aplomb, you really ought to bone up on the band that was one of the most important members of the British alternative rock scene during the 1980s. Slate writer (and NYC-based comedian) Chris Gerard, wearer of Smiths- and Morrissey-inspired tattoos, reviews A Light That Never Goes Out. It's a 658-page, no-raw-emotion-left-unturned account of the enduring band from Manchester, England. Read it now so you can rest up before Morrissey really does release his memoir, rumored to be some 200,000 words long.
