There are several people in the Indianapolis music community whose aura beams like a beacon of light wherever they go, inspiring fellow artists and creators to push their craft to further and further heights: Jon Rogers at Musical Family Tree, Jacob Gardner, Oreo Jones, and Kat Coplen at NUVO are just a few names that come immediately to mind. Producer and promoter Jay Brookinz is another local music angel whose halo burns incandescent in local hip-hop circles.
Brookinz will host his sixth annual beat battle tonight at The Vogue, when 16 producers will showcase their talent before a panel of judges with the hope of earning a $500 cash prize and, more importantly, a year's worth of bragging rights. Too often, producers serve as an afterthought in hip-hop, with rappers hogging the lion's share of limelight. With the Beat Battle, Brookinz aims to turn that equation on its head.
Tonight's crop of producers showcases the diverse talent in Indy. The cast of characters includes established names such as LONEgevity whose own Writer's Block Showcase is a staple in the local producer scene, alongside a fierce lineup of up-and-comers that span multiple genres. In addition to the 16 producers listed below, there will be live performances from Grey Granite, Pope Adrian Bless, Sirius Blvck, Maxie and a guest set from elder statesman, DJ Topspeed.
Tickets for Jay Brookinz sixth Annual Beat Battle are available for $10. The festivities kick off at 9 p.m.
